Private Educators – because education isn’t (and shouldn’t be) one size fits all.
Private Educators
Westside Nannies believes that education isn’t one size fits all and is proud to support parents who prefer a unique and customized in-home educational plan.
Personalized Education
Our private educators come from a variety of backgrounds and include credentialed teachers, homeschool teachers, tutors, and college-educated nannies with a passion for education. Candidates offer a wide-range of educational styles including Montessori, Waldorf, Classical, and Unschooling and are adept at customizing their approach to suit your needs or following your unique education plan.
Anytime. Anywhere.
Families who travel frequently, are touring, or those who frequently work on location can especially benefit from homeschooling. Private educators are able to travel with the family for extended periods of time, allowing the children to stay with the parents while they are working away from home.
Hands-On Learning
Traveling and homeschooling can provide exceptional educational benefits – there is nothing compared to learning about history where it actually happened or seeing the painting in person that you studied about the day prior. Our private educators are able to research your travel locations in advance and plan a customized educational itinerary for the children making the most out of each location.
Private Educator Rates
Our placement counselors will work closely with you to develop a competitive compensation package based upon your family’s needs. Rates for private educators vary greatly depending on the candidate’s experience and education as well as the number of children, grade levels represented, duties, preferred schedule, and the level of travel and flexibility required in the role (if any). Current rates for private educators are between $40-$100 per hour.

Private Educator FAQs
Here are some of the questions we hear most from LA families considering a private educator:
What is a private educator?
A private educator is a teaching professional who provides a customized, in-home education for your children. Whether you're homeschooling full-time, supplementing traditional school, or need a flexible educational setup that travels with your family, a private educator builds a learning experience around your child, not the other way around.
How is a private educator different from a tutor?
A tutor typically supports a child in specific subjects or fills gaps in a traditional school curriculum. A private educator takes on a broader role, often serving as the primary teacher and designing a full educational plan tailored to your child's learning style, interests, and goals. It's the difference between supplemental support and a complete, customized education.
How is a private educator different from a nanny?
A nanny's focus is on the care and well-being of the children. A private educator's focus is on their academic growth and development. Some families hire both, and some look for a nanny with a strong educational background who can help fill in some gaps and bring education to the home. We can help you figure out the right fit.
What educational backgrounds do private educators typically have?
Our private educators come from a wide range of backgrounds, including credentialed teachers, experienced homeschool educators, and tutors. Many are well-versed in a variety of educational philosophies and approaches, including Montessori, Waldorf, Classical, and Unschooling, and are skilled at customizing their approach or following a plan you've already put in place.
Can a private educator travel with our family?
Absolutely, and travel is actually one of the biggest draws of this role. Private educators are well-suited to extended travel and can accompany your family wherever you go, keeping your children's education on track no matter where in the world you are. Many will research your travel destinations in advance and build a customized educational itinerary around each location, turning every trip into a hands-on learning experience.
Who is a private educator a good fit for?
Private educators are a great option for families who travel frequently, work on location or on tour, split time between residences, or simply prefer a more personalized approach to education than a traditional school environment offers. If your family's lifestyle doesn't fit neatly into a standard school calendar, a private educator can flex to meet you where you are.
What educational philosophies do your private educators work with?
Our candidates are experienced in a wide range of approaches, including Montessori, Waldorf, Classical, and Unschooling, among others. If you already have a curriculum or educational philosophy in mind, we'll find someone who aligns with it. If you're still figuring it out, many of our educators are happy to help guide that process.
How much does a private educator cost in Los Angeles?
Rates for private educators typically range from $45 to $100 per hour, depending on the educator's experience and credentials, the number of children, the grade levels involved, the scope of duties, and whether travel is part of the role. Our placement counselors will work with you to develop a compensation package that fits your family's needs.
What qualifications do Westside Nannies' private educator candidates have?
Every candidate in our pool goes through our rigorous 10-Point NannyScreen, and less than 4% of applicants make it through. We require thoroughly verified references and a strong professional background. For private educator roles specifically, we look for candidates with formal teaching credentials, relevant educational experience, and the ability to create and follow a thoughtful, age-appropriate curriculum.
How long does the placement process take?
Most families are reviewing candidates within a week or two of submitting their family application. We encourage families to begin their search at least 6 weeks before their ideal start date. The more detail you can give us about your children's ages, learning styles, educational goals, and schedule, the faster we can find the right match.
